Thunderstorm Watch in Cottage Grove Area?
6/21/2022 (Permalink)
Thunderstorms can happen any time of the year in Cottage Grove when the right atmospheric conditions present themselves. Our Springfield and East Lane County team offers this information about thunderstorm alerts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration:
A thunderstorm watch is issued when severe thunderstorms are possible in and near the watch area. It does not mean they will occur; it only means they are possible.
A thunderstorm warning is issued when severe thunderstorms are occurring or are imminent in the warning area.
Severe thunderstorms are defined as follows:
- Winds of 58 miles per hour or higher
- Hail one inch in diameter or larger
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) offers these tips for preparing for a thunderstorm:
- Know your area’s risk of thunderstorms. They can occur year-round and at any hour.
- Sign up for your community’s warning system. The Emergency Alert System (EAS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio also provide emergency alerts.
- Identify sturdy buildings close to where you live, work, study, and play
- Cut down or trim trees that may be in danger of falling on your home
- Consider buying surge protectors, lightning rods, or a lightning protection system to protect your home, appliances, and electronic devices
- Secure outside furniture
