1962 Columbus Day Storm - Worst Storm in Oregon History?
10/11/2022 (Permalink)
Sixty years ago, the Columbus Day Storm, known as the “Big Blow,” wreaked havoc on Western Oregon and Washington. According to the Oregonian, m ore than 300 people were hospitalized, and 53,000 homes in the two states were significantly damaged. Sixteen-thousand trees were blown down in Portland alone, and miles of power lines also came down.
“Hurricane winds shrieked in from the Pacific and knocked all of Western Oregon to its knees,” The Oregonian wrote. Streets in Portland and cities and towns across the Northwest were left covered with “broken trees, fallen signs, shattered glass, and tangled power lines.”
The storm was quickly labeled the “worst weather disaster in Oregon’s history.”
