Our local Springfield and East Lane County teams respond to storm damage emergencies every year in Pleasant Hill. As weather conditions continue to change and become more severe, it is imperative that communities be prepared for the next big weather event or disaster. It’s good to know that we are part of a national network of over 2000 franchises and we can mobilize quickly to mitigate and restore any disaster damage, no matter how extensive the damage may be.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is focused on responding to and recovering from disasters and events that challenge our nation. During September each year, FEMA hosts National Preparedness Month, a month devoted to preparing individuals and communities to manage disaster situations effectively. This year’s theme focuses on elderly populations and equipping communities and aging adults with the information, resources, and support they need to stay safe during a disaster or other emergency. According to the American Red Cross, some factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disasters may include:
- A greater likelihood to suffer from chronic conditions and the need for associated medications
- A greater reliance on assistive devices such as walkers or glasses, as well as support from caregivers and others
- An increased likelihood of social isolation
